A social network is a social structure made up of individuals or organisations that are linked by one or more type of ideas, values or vision. The purpose for many people belonging to these online social networks can be work related, educational or personal.
Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organised by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves.

Basic Functions
Home page- Blog feed, opportunity to update your status and share with others what you are doing. You are also able to comment on other people’s status which shows on the homepage blog. (Community)
Profile page –Blog feed of communication from you and friends added on facebook. (Individual)
Chat function – Able to chat in real time with people online. Able to switch chat function off while still remaining online.
Photo sharing – Able to create and upload photo’s to share with others on facebook. (Friends list) Photo’s can be uploaded to flickr and picnik to be edited.
Applications – A variety of programs that are imported to facebook. Share information which can be used for collaboration purposes.
Widgets – They come from applications and can be added to profile page.
